Themes in a Systematic Approach to Macro Investing

A synthesis of the recurring frameworks and philosophy behind a regime-based, risk-managed approach to macro investing.

Prepared September 2026

1

Process over prediction

This is the philosophical spine:

“It is impossible to generate consistently accurate forecasts… any investor who believes they can accurately forecast the future… is either a newsletter-writing charlatan or someone who has succumbed to the Illusion of Validity.”

The goal isn’t to call the future but to be “on the right side of market risk” — long what’s trending up, short or out of what’s trending down. The tagline crystallizes it: “Don’t predict. Prepare.”

2

“Quantamental” — quant signals plus fundamental research

They market the blend as their edge: distill markets into disciplined quantitative risk-management signals, then layer qualitative/fundamental research on top. Neither alone; the systematic overlay is what enforces discipline against cognitive bias.

3

Regime identification via a growth × inflation matrix

The core lens is a growth × inflation rate-of-change matrix producing four regimes.

Goldilocks Risk-on
Growth up, inflation down
Reflation Risk-on
Growth up, inflation up
Inflation Risk-off
Growth down, inflation up
Deflation Risk-off
Growth down, inflation down

Goldilocks and Reflation (risk-on) favor equities, credit, commodities, and crypto; Inflation and Deflation (risk-off) favor cash, gold, Treasuries, and defensives. A daily risk matrix nowcasts the current regime by scoring a broad universe of markets with a volatility-adjusted momentum signal.

4

Nowcasting over forecasting, plus anticipating regime change

A three-step process:

  1. Identify and position for the current regime;
  2. Anticipate transitions using quantitative signals — a systematic 3-month outlook across stocks, bonds, dollar, commodities, and Bitcoin built on “real economy” cycles (growth, inflation, employment, profits, fiscal) and “financial economy” cycles (liquidity, credit, rates, sentiment/fear-greed);
  3. Confirm with qualitative research.

The key watch-item is a phase transition between risk-on and risk-off conditions.

5

Risk management and probabilities over big bold calls

Like the eBook, they emphasize survival and capital preservation across cycles rather than heroic single bets. This shows up in productized, rules-based portfolio overlays — such as a systematic model portfolio — that translate regime reads into concrete factor tilts and allocations.

6

Liquidity and flows as primary drivers

A distinctive emphasis: they treat global liquidity, credit, and flows as core inputs, arguing you don’t need to predict liquidity to benefit from trends and inflections in it — you just need a disciplined process to respond.
